Straight Talk About…
Camels and Asses
by Dr. Ray & Michelle Pearson
(with help from our guest blogger, Amy Carmichael)
How’s that for an eye-opening, attention grabbing title? Well, as the by-line indicates, we can’t take credit for that nor the content of today’s blog, because it is coming straight from the Shepherd’s heart and the servant’s pen, through our guest blogger, Amy Carmichael.
Continuing our “Straight Talk About…” series, the following text is a direct quotation from the book, “Whispers of His Power” by Amy Carmichael, copyright 1982 by the Dohnavur Fellowship, first published by Triangle, SPCK, Holy Trinity Church, Marylebone Road, London, printed and distributed in the United States of America by Fleming H. Revell Company.
As we sought the Lord in the past weeks and again this morning, we are making our way through 366 devotions written years before we were born, in the time of the Spirit’s moving in the great seed-planters, during the historic time from about 1880-1920’s. During this time many profound truths were deposited into the Body of Christ in the earth by great and humble men and women of God.
This was the time of Andrew Murray, John G Lake, Amy Semple McPherson, William J. Seymour, the Azusa Street revival, William Ashley “Billy” Sunday, the famous athlete and evangelist, as well as the beloved British missionary to India, Amy Carmichael, among others. The seeds planted in this extraordinary time were planted for Generation Now, for such a time as this. We do well to take note of their collective voice of wisdom for today’s time of health and harvest, Spirit, Soul, and Body.
If you come to The Picture of Health strictly for natural physical health tips, you sell yourself very short to shut off now and miss the power of help in this seemingly unconnected blog. Take a few minutes and see how life and body transforming the next little bit of wisdom can be in your life!
The straight talk in the blog below gives us great revelation to ponder and apply to things in our lives at this moment, as well as an opportunity for a great big belly laugh. We hope it will provide for you both wisdom and humor to choose correctly for complete health!
Enjoy and EMPLOY the nuggets from Amy Carmichael, from “Whispers of His Power”:
Over the camels, Obil the Ishmaelite; over the she-donkeys, Jehdeiah the Meronothite; 1 Chron 27:30 (AMP)
“Have you to try to help people who are rather like camels? You want them to go one way, and they go another. You try persuasion and they turn sulky. It is difficult to be patient with an animal that never looks pleased. It is very difficult to be patient with human camels.
But God knows all about you and your difficulties, and your name is not forgotten by Him. He thought the name of a camel driver who lived three thousand years ago worth writing in His Book. The name of thousands of great kings are buried and forgotten, but the name of David’s camel driver is remembered to this day: Over the camels was Obil.
Obil means driver or leader. I expect he sometimes found leading better than driving, and so sometimes shall we. God gives His Obils patience to deal with their camels.
Jehdeiah’s name meant ‘Union of Jah’. I once had a letter from a man who was trying to run a big political organization in India. He said he had sympathy with Paul {the Apostle}, who wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:32 that he had fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, but he was quite sure it was still harder to fight with asses.
I am glad that we do not have to fight with asses, but we certainly have to look after them sometimes. I wonder if Jehdeiah found comfort in his name? {‘Union of Jah’, as in union of ‘Yaweh’, God} Work like his needs patience, firmness, kindness, and these good things are not naturally in us. John 15:5, WITHOUT Me, you can do nothing, is a word that all who have to do with asses understand. WITH Me – that is the secret. God in us can be patient and kind, even with poor asses.
God makes all of us who have to do with asses, His Jedeiah’s.”
Revelation can save lives.
Believe. Choose. Activate. Achieve. (Repeat.)
“Hold fast and follow the pattern of wholesome and sound teaching which you have heard from me, in [all] the faith and love which are [for us] in Christ Jesus. Guard and keep [with the greatest care] the precious and excellently adapted [Truth] which has been entrusted [to you], by the [help of the] Holy Spirit
